"Old School vs. New School"

Not all traditions are good to hold on to and pass down as the LAW. Ever wondered why certain families keep having the same issues over, and over, and over? Well I was talking to a friend yesterday and we were talking about raising kids. Her take was that she just doesn't understand her teenage daughter. She can't get with the kind of music she likes, her style of dress, the tv shows, anything just seems foreign to her. When I asked her had she taken the time to walk side by side with her daughter to try to get to know this new person she has become, she said NO! She preceded to say that "she is old school and her daughter is new school', and she couldn't relate. Now mind you we are not talking about a parent that is fifty yet! So as I probed, it became clear to me that what I was witnessing was a clear case of "Mistaken Identity". My friend the Mom, had forgotten the key rule of growing up, you must find your own identity. And even though she was raised differently than her daughter, the experiences are very close that she is going through. When we reach maturity we can't forget the struggles that we went through, especially when raising kids, we must be able to identify with them but take on the role as expert on the subject. It should not matter what we didn't have or how far we had to walk to the store, it just matters that we had a store to go to. We should not alienate them. Our responsibility is to mentor them and lead them, especially in the area's that we didn't have anyone to guide us. We should be to our kids what we needed as children. Deal from a position of authority and wisdom. We can not operate out of fear because that will surely push them away and down the wrong path. What information that was good for us back then, may not be good for them alone now. My daughter doesn't know what a world without the internet is like, she can't believe I didn't have access to it until I was an adult. So I can't keep her from it, but I can educate her on how to and the correct way to use it and to make sure she understands that it is a tool not a toy. When I was young we had to be watchful not to talk to strangers on the street. Now with the internet, we must take it a step further to teach not to talk to strangers on line. Being a parent can be challenging and rewarding, but we have to choose what we will make it. I suggest enjoying the ride as the Mom, Mentor and friend.
